Common PAT Testing Questions

What is PAT testing, and why is it important for care homes?

PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) involves checking electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. In care homes, PAT testing is crucial to protect residents' and staff from potential electrical and fire hazards, and to comply with safety regulations.

How often should residents' appliances be PAT tested?

Typically, care homes test residents' appliances when they first arrive, then perform annual checks. Additionally, any new appliances brought in during a residents' stay should be tested before use.

Can non-electricians perform PAT testing in our care home?

Yes, they can — provided they receive the appropriate training. According to the Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (5th Edition), the person performing PAT testing must be a "competent person". Our comprehensive training courses equip your staff with the skills and certification to carry out PAT testing in compliance with the regulatory standards.

Does a PAT tester need any maintenance?

Yes, it is important to have your PAT tester calibrated annually to ensure it provides accurate readings and to ensure that all safety standards are met. First Stop Safety offers calibration services to keep your equipment in top condition.

What support does First Stop Safety offer if we encounter issues during testing?

First Stop Safety provides ongoing support, including technical assistance and expert advice. Whether you have questions about the testing process or encounter an unexpected issue, our team is here for you and your staff to help every step of the way.
